Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, September 24, 2017 – Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, yet suicide is preventable. More than 300 people from throughout Fuquay-Varina are expected to participate in the annual Fuquay-Varina Out of the Darkness Community Walk hosted by the North Carolina State Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) at 2:00 p.m., September 24, 2017 at South Park, 900 S. Main Street. This fundraising walk supports AFSP’s local, state and national education and advocacy programs and its bold goal to reduce the annual rate of suicide 20 percent by 2025.
“We walk to raise awareness about this important health issue. Suicide touches one in five American families. We hope that by walking we save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide,”
said Katie Biasi, Public Relations Chair for the FV OOTD Community Walk.
The Fuquay-Varina Out of the Darkness Walk is one of more than 375 Out of the Darkness Community Walks being held nationwide this year. The walks are expected to unite more than 250,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts. Last year this walk raised over $24,000 and had 285 participants.
Ken Smith, WRAL TV Anchor and Reporter, will be the Fuquay-Varina Out of the Darkness Walk Master of Ceremonies. Speakers at the Fuquay-Varina Out of the Darkness Walk will include: John Byrne, Mayor of Fuquay-Varina; Kay Digh, Fuquay-Varina Middle and High School Psychologist; and Sergeant First Class (SFC) Dalmara Gamble of the North Carolina National Guard.
“These walks are about turning hope into action,” said AFSP CEO Robert Gebbia. “Suicide is a serious problem, but it’s a problem we can solve. The research has shown us how to fight suicide, and if we keep up the fight the science is only going to get better, our culture will get smarter about mental health, and we’ll be able to save more people from dying from depression and other mental health conditions.”
The 5th Annual Fuquay-Varina Out of the Darkness Community Walk will take place on Sunday, September 24 at Fuquay-Varina’s South Park. Registration starts at 1p.m.and “The Walk” at 2p.m. All proceeds benefit local and national prevention and awareness programs of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
